There & It - Dummy Subjects
THERE In English Grammar ‘there’ is not any part of speech when a sentence starts with ‘there’. Use of ‘there’ in a sentence in the beginning is called expletive. Sentence with ‘there’ in the beginning can be paraphrased with the verb ‘exist’ or ‘be - verb’. ‘there’ is actually a dummy subject though starts at the beginning of a sentence followed by verb like a subject. About ten different constructions are possible with 'there'. A sentence without there: A snake exists in the back yard. With ‘there’: There is a snake in the backyard.
